Though she first came to prominence as a romantic poet during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, it was as Russia’s ‘Cassandra’ during the violent days of Revolution and even bloodier years of Anna Akhmatova was immensely dignified, with unhurried gestures, a noble head, beautiful, somewhat severe features, and an expression of immense sadness. Akhmatova's son Lev was arrested again at the end of 1949 and sentenced to 10 years in a Siberian prison camp.
